Why a Printable Pet Sitter Instructions Sheet Saved My Cat's Life While I Was Away

I've had cats my entire adult life. I consider myself a competent pet owner. So when I went on a 10-day trip to Japan last year, I thought leaving my friend Sarah a sticky note with "feed Luna twice a day, scoop box every other day, water in the blue bowl" was perfectly sufficient.

I was wrong. And I almost lost my cat because of it.

What Went Wrong

Day 4 of my trip, Luna stopped eating. Sarah noticed but didn't know what to do — she didn't know who Luna's vet was, didn't know if it was an emergency, didn't know Luna's medical history. She texted me at 3 AM (Tokyo time), I was asleep, and by the time I saw the message 6 hours later, Luna hadn't eaten in 24 hours and was hiding under the bed. Sarah was panicking, I was panicking, and nobody had the information they needed.

• Veterinary info — clinic name, address, phone number, after-hours emergency number, Luna's microchip number, vaccine status, and a note that I authorize treatment up to $500 before being contacted
• Emergency contacts — me (with international dialing code), my backup contact (my mom, who lives nearby), and a neighbor who has a key
• Behavior & preferences — Luna hates the vacuum, loves the feather wand, sleeps on the laundry basket, scratches the corner of the couch no matter what you do, and is terrified of thunderstorms
• House instructions — where the litter box is, what cleaner to use, trash day schedule, wifi password, thermostat preferences, alarm code
• "What to do if..." — a section for common scenarios: if she doesn't eat for 12 hours, if she vomits twice, if she hides for more than a day, if she gets outside

Why It Works

Last month, I went to a conference for 4 days. My neighbor watched Luna. On day 2, she noticed Luna was scratching at her ear more than usual. She checked the instructions, found the "what to do if" section, and saw: "If she's scratching ears excessively and shaking head — check for redness. If mild, wipe with cotton ball. If severe or persists 24 hours, call vet."

She wiped the ear, it looked fine, and she monitored it. By the next day, Luna was fine. No panicked texts, no unnecessary vet visit, no worry. The sheet empowered her to make a judgment call without me.

Setting Up Your Own Sheet

Don't wait until you're packing for a trip. Fill out the pet sitter instructions now and keep it on the fridge. Here's my advice:

• Be specific. Don't write "feed the cat" — write "give 1/2 can of Wellness Core chicken in the AM (7-8am) and 1/4 cup of Blue Wilderness kibble in the PM (6-7pm)"
• Write it so a 12-year-old could follow it. You never know who might end up caring for your pet in an emergency.
• Include photos. A picture of your pet with distinguishing features helps if they get lost. Also a photo of the exact food bowl setup.
• Pre-authorize vet care. Write "I authorize treatment up to $X without contacting me." This saves precious time in an emergency when you might be on a plane or in a meeting.
• Update it regularly. Every time your pet gets a new medication, changes food, or gets a new habit, update the sheet.

A printable pet sitter instruction sheet takes 15 minutes to fill out. It could save your pet's life. Mine almost taught me that lesson the hard way. Don't learn it that way.
